Is it a Heart Attack?
The most common sign of a heart attack is intense, severe pain in the centre of the chest and can spread to the left arm, neck, jaw and area between shoulder blades. Sometimes the pain could be just in the arms or just in the jaw
This pain could be accompanied by a nauseous feeling, vomiting, sweating, feeling of weakness and sudden bowel movement. In severe cases, the person may lose consciousness. None of these symptoms are an assurance that the person is having a heart attack. But the more the symptoms, the more likely that it is a heart attack.
Though, in some cases [usually in the case of certain diabetics, women and people over 65], there may be very little pain or even no pain at all.
The pain can last anywhere from 15-20 minutes to up to twelve hours.
It is important to immediately rush the person to the hospital because 50% of deaths in a heart attack happen within the first hour of the attack. The first hour is called the ‘golden hour’. Medical intervention within the golden hour greatly improves the chances of recovery.
