Salt intake is closely related to cancer of the stomach and is likely to be an important pre-disposing cause. Salt in the concentration found in many processed or instant foods, eg instant soups, soya sauce, is a profound gastric irritant. It is proposed that a high salt intake strips the lining of the stomach and may pre-dispose the individual to H-pylori infection. Int J Epidemiol. 1996;25:494-504

Re: Salt and Cancer
People who eat lots of highly salted food double their risk of stomach cancer, research suggests.
The risk of stomach cancer was one in 500 per year for those men with the highest salt intake - twice the rate for those who ate the least salt.
The research is published in the British Journal of Cancer.
For women, the risk was one in 1,300 per year for those who ate the highest amount of salt, compared to one in 2,000 for those with a relatively salt-free diet.

Re: Salt and Cancer
@Sona. It's not the salt but the over consumption of salt that increases acidity in the stomach and gradually erodes the gastric lining. This increases the exposure to bacteria H.Pylori. H.pylori is spiral-shaped bacteria found in the stomach, which
generates substances that weakens the stomach's protective
mucus and damages stomach tissue, causes inflammation of the
stomach lining and peptic ulcers.
About 50% of the world’s population may have H.pylori infection and the number could be as high
as 70% in developing countries. However, there may be no effect or signs or any symptoms in
most people with H.pylori infection.
H. pylori infection is the most common cause of stomach ulcers, and it also causes inflammation
of the stomach lining. H.pylori infection may also contribute to stomach cancers and other
digestive system cancers.
You can contract an H. pylori infection even by sharing an eating utensil with an infected person.
Sometimes the acid in stomach reflux back into throat causing chronic sore throat and coughing.

Re: Salt and Cancer
To simplify explanation-Excess salt and foods containing Aginomoto/MSG increases the acidity in stomach and erodes the stomach lining with long term usage. This causes exposure to bacterial infection H.pylori which produces carcinogens.
