Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Medicines such as inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonists may be used to treat acute attacks.Attacks can also be prevented by avoiding triggering factors such as allergens or rapid temperature changes and through drug treatment such as inhaled corticosteroids. Leukotriene antagonists are less effective than corticosteroids, but have fewer side effects. The monoclonal antibody omalizumab is sometimes effective.

Pharmacogenetics studies can also help us develop adjunctive and new treatments that improve our ability to treat patients with asthma. For example, we and others demonstrated that polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor are associated with the development of asthma. We then started to investigate the use of vitamin D as an adjuvant therapy and are now exploring whether low levels of vitamin D might be one of the reasons that patients don′t respond to steroid. In theory, if we could put these patients on higher doses of vitamin D, we might be able to ameliorate or alleviate their steroid resistance or steroid nonresponsiveness.
