The disease manifests as fever of sudden onset associated with headache, muscle and joint pains (myalgias and arthralgias-severe pain that gives it the nickname break-bone fever or bonecrusher disease), and rash. The classic dengue rash is a generalised maculopapular rash with islands of sparing. A hemorrhagic rash of characteristically bright red pinpoint spots, known as petechiae can occur later during the illness and is associated with thrombocytopenia.

Brian Kay told in his interview on Oct 30, 2008 Across the Pacific this year, dengue fever is in plague proportions. Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia, Kiribati, New Caledonia and Palau are reporting unusually high levels of the virus. Dengue fever is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites and is severely painful, debilitating and at times fatal. The outbreak has swept across Fiji in recent weeks with around 2000 people sick with the fever. Queensland's Institute of Medical Research is one of the premier institutions in the southern hemisphere looking at treatment and prevention of dengue fever.
