Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is known to last for a duration of approximately 6 weeks before subsiding. The disease derives its name from the "whoop" sound made from the inspiration of air after a cough.

After an incubation period that is typically seven to ten days, pertussis in infants or young children is characterized initially by mild respiratory infection symptoms such as mild coughing, sneezing, or runny nose (catarrhal stage).

The investigators, who are interviewing people who were treated for pertussis, are particularly interested in learning what symptoms they had. They also have contacted three or four local health-care facilities to ask that their patients with new cough-related illnesses take part in the investigation. Participation is voluntary.
