Women's health refers to health issues specific to human female anatomy. These often relate to structures such as female genitalia and breasts or to conditions caused by hormones specific to, or most notable in, females. Women's health issues include menstruation, contraception, maternal health, child birth, menopause and breast cancer. They can also include medical situations in which women face problems not directly related to their biology, for example gender-differentiated access to medical treatment. A greater understanding of women's health issues had been one of the successes of the feminist movement, a development that drew attention to the fact that while men had dominated most societies in most fields.

Sen said there is a “lack of acknowledgment” of illnesses among Indian women that isn’t the same as a lack of awareness. Women are often aware they’re ill but say they didn’t think it was serious - or their family didn’t think it was serious - as reasons they didn’t seek or continue care. Sen traced the ripples of that “lack of acknowledgment” to nationwide Indian health statistics that seem to show an apparent contradiction: that poor Indian women are healthier than wealthier Indian women. The health care discrimination against Indian women begins at a young age, Sen said, with girls experiencing poorer nutrition and health care and less playtime and rest than boys. Statistics about the long-term effects of these early differences are lacking, she said, so researchers don’t know if girls adjust as they grow or whether it affects them throughout their lives.
